Understanding The Conveyor System On the Labelling Machine.

Driven by motor to transport the products from one location to another, conveyors are generally used in all stages of the factory production – filling, packaging, labelling and distribution. They have become a key element in all automated facilities and applications today, responsible for orientating and metering out product, providing buffering and staging between processes.

3 types of conveyor system are commonly used on labelling machines: Green belt conveyor, black belt conveyor and plastic top chain (PTC) conveyor. They are equipped with different characteristics and have been used for different labelling purposes.


  • Materials:

Black belt conveyors are made of synthetic belt that use a combination of fabric and polyester material; the material for green belt conveyors is similar to black belt but PVC material is applied instead. Plastic top chain conveyor is assembled with modular plastic parts into conveyor belt.


  • Mechanism:

Black belt and green belt conveyors move with the friction created between the belt surface and the motor-driven conveyor pulley. This allows them to operate in fast speed with low noise generated.

PTC conveyors move via positive drive where the plastic sprocket under the belt propel it forward, fast conveyor speed is anticipated from the low friction generated from the positive drive. However, loud noise generated from the vibration when runs in higher speed is unavoidable, making it unfeasible for certain noise sensitive production environment.


  • Application/Usage:

As friction drive was used for both black belt and green belt conveyors, heavy objects are not recommended on them as it will increase the belt friction result in slower operation and more susceptible to breakage in long run. Green belt conveyor with PVC surface has higher friction relative to black belt, making it a more appropriate choice for feather light products on top labelling machine such as egg trays, plastic bags and empty plastic trays. Whereas black belt with moderate friction is commonly used for round bottle on wrap around labelling machine to avoid too much friction applied while bottles are being rotate for labelling process.

On the contrary, PTC conveyors are usually employed for heavy objects such as detergent bottles, jerry cans, or edible oils for the durability and hard surface derived from plastic that allows product to stay still on conveyors during transport whilst providing sufficient support on products weights. Light weight products are not recommended on PTC due to the strong vibration and lack-of-grip surface as products might topple during the process.


  • Maintenance

Black belt and green belt conveyor both faced a major drawback – the ability for the belt to stay centered. Any alteration of the belt width and length will require proper design and tuning in order for the belt to be centered. Adding guides at the belt bottom could help to stay centered but might impair on performance due to additional friction.

As for PTC, the conveyor is always centered thanks to the positive drive. Conveyor runaway is impossible unless the teeth are broken. The cost for PTC conveyor is higher because of the way it is fabricated. Although the plastic module used to fabricate PTC is inexpensive, however, the cost is very much driven by the manpower required to assemble the component.

In term of maintenance, the entire black belt and green belt requires to be replaced while the modular design of PTC requires only a section of the component to be replaced if damage occur.

Prevent Label Breakage During Labelling Process

Label breakage is one issue that often go unnoticed during downtimes analysis but the impact it brought to machine downtimes should not be neglected. Label breakage happens when the label rolls from the un-winder could not withstand the opposite force acted from the label re-winder motor, which could be resulted from many factors.

Labelling productivity is affected when labels get ripped-apart during labelling process as the operator has to pause the process to remove broken labels from the conveyor and reconnect the remaining labels to the re-winder. Test on label dispensing functions and label gap are required to carry out to ensure on the following label placement accuracy.


There are multiple factors involved that could possibly contribute to label breakage:


1. Label Placement On the Applicator

The applicator of the labelling machine is a steel plate with sharp edge that allows label to dispense from the label roll. The label liner is required to be placed in between the applicator to prevent the label liner from shifting up and down during labelling process to minimize the chances of label breakage.


2. Label Die-cut

The thickness for label liner pose impacts on the label especially die-cut paper label. When labels are die-cut, they are actually being push down on the liner. A small split on paper liner that is hard to see might occur when the liner is thin. If that paper liner is hooked up to an applicator, the pressure and tension in that applicator can rip off the liner.


3. Label perforation

Always ensure the label roll on the labelling machine does not consists of perforation. The purpose of perforation on label roll is to ease manual label tearing process and strongly not recommended to use on labelling machine due to the high tension on applicator to dispense label during labelling process.


4. Length of Label Tongue

Label tongue is where the amount of label overhangs at the dispensing edge of the applicator before the label fully dispensed. The length of the overhung label decides how accurate the label placement go and the possibility of label breakage. The best length to maintain is around 3mm from the applicator steel plate; too long might cause the label to tear apart as the label could stick on the product earlier than the time the label dispenser is set to dispense label, causing breakage to happen.


5. Speed of Conveyor & Applicator

Synchronization is important to keep label placement accurate. Same goes to label breakage prevention. When the conveyor is running much faster that the label applicator, the label might be forcefully tear apart before it gets fully dispensed. Adding an encoder device could help to stay away from this problem by synchronizing the speed of conveyor and label applicator dispenser.

  • Barcode
Also known as databar, It is a machine-readable linear one-dimensional code that contains a set of numerical and characters shown parallel line patterns in different width.   • QR Codes (Quick Response codes)
Also a type of barcode, QR codes are used for item identification, product tracking and providing marketing information to consumers. They can be read rapidly by a range of devices including smartphones with an inbuilt QR code reader. As compared to the traditional barcodes with only 20 characters capacity, QR codes allows over 7,000 characters with faster machine reading speed.   • Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID)
RFID is made of 2 components, a tag/label and a reader. The RFID tags/label is embedded with a transmitter and a receiver. In the tag, there is a microchip to store information and an antenna to receive and transmit signal. Commonly available in 2 types, battery powered and passive tags. A passive RFID tag will use the radio wave produced by the receiver to relay the information back to the receiver; the battery powered RFID tag is embedded with a small battery to relay information. Whilst the cost might be higher for RFID label, it is one revolutionary technology that allows flexibility for data updating on system, fast data reading and doesn’t require line of sight to read data.

Clean label is not about label design.

It is a concept of producing products containing clean and simple ingredients that consumers recognize. Consumers nowadays are increasingly cautious of ingredients they do not recognize, prompting demands for options free of G.M.O.s, gluten and “science sounding” preservatives.

A study by MMR Research indicates a rate of 70 percent of Asia Pacific-based consumers feel it is important to see keywords such as ‘no additives’ or ‘no artificial ingredients’ listed when considering purchase of food products whilst 73 percent of them are willing to pay a higher retail price for a food product made with ingredients they recognize and trust. Other key factors they consider during purchase decision include nutrition information on-pack, price and perceived quality.

As the concept of clean label evolved, it has become essential to include much more than just label and the ingredient list, with a focus on the product as a whole, including sourcing, production, ingredients and packaging, calling for transparency, traceability and quality for food products. Product label matters because research reveals consumers make a subconscious judgement about a product within 7 seconds of initial viewing and 74% of consumers will make purchase based on product visual appearance.  Labelling is especially important when you are new to market because once a consumer has developed loyalty to a product, packaging and labels become less of a factor when it comes to purchase decision.

Size & Position
Fitting is key. A label that is too big may encounter challenges during application that might affect the impression you are trying to create. Deciding where to place the label would be rather important to ensure maximum impact to capture audience’s attention and eyeballs immediately when they are out on shelves. The amount of information required to display on product label is yet another important factor to consider too. Always remember to not overstuffed information. It is vital on keeping a balance between being too informative and lack of information.

Colour Consistency
It is crucial to practice consistency and standardisation on the way colours appear across your labels as it reflects the tone of your brand and affect customer recognition on your product. Work your artwork/design around Pantone matching system(PMS), CMYK, RGB, or a combination to ensure the colour outcome is always consistent.

It is important to take into consideration of the shape of label and product container as cohesiveness is important in this case. Tapered/convex containers might be challenging. You should also consider the label application method, either by hands or through labelling machine as it affects the labelling outcomes.

Font Readability
Always ensure your product label is readable. A product label generally carries information such as the name of the product, logo, a short description; sometimes, lengthier information such as instructions on how to use, ingredients and so on.
